RVA Playlist #102: Lots of Local Stuff
New music from Landon Elliott, The Wayward Leaves, Knifing Around, more
Well. It’s been a while, hasn’t it? That’s on me and the upheaval that life can throw your way.
A lot has changed for me this year. New job, new opportunities, pulling myself up from depression, new passion projects, new outlook on life, a new version of my book out next week, another book in the works, and the ever-increasing anxiety for the future of our world. That’s also left me with a severe backlog of music I just haven’t had the time or ability to focus on. So in in effort to catch up, here’s a rapid fire look at some uhh…. new(ish) local music that I’ve been enjoying in the meantime.
Landon Elliott - aftermath
Hot off the presses is Landon Elliott’s brand new album aftermath and this collection of songs about a man finding his truest self is really hitting home for me. It’s an incredible and intense piece of work. “Chameleon” is quickly becoming a favorite track.
The Wayward Leaves - Thursdays at Six
The sheer amount of local talent on the debut record from Americana/folk band The Wayward Leaves is astounding. The Leaves are Ross Wright, Curtis Wayne Patton, Rachel Epp, Mara Smith, Per Ohrstrom, Jason Carter, and Phil Heesen - all incredible musicians in their own right. But then you add all the guests on this album (Caroline Vain, Nate Clark, Rebekah Rafferty, and Howard Wright) and you have a beautiful collection of melodies. This is very good music to do yard work to.
Ross Wright - I Don’t Need A Brand New Day
And speaking of Ross, he also released a wonderful solo record vastly different from his work with the Wayward Leaves. It’s full of indie electric pop fun and I can’t stop listening.
Knifing Around - All Across the Nation
Wonderfully comfortable chaos that Knifing Around is well known for. Play this one loud.
Harvest Blaque - The Care Package
Bryan “Harvest Blaque” Hancock blends hip-hop and spoken word in a sound journey full of personal highs and lows wrapped up in catchy beats and soulful language.
Tyler Meacham - Sad Girl Summer
Summer, sad girl or otherwise, has long since passed, but Tyler Meacham has crafted a delightful collection of songs you will absolutely enjoy.
This Week’s Playlist - WRIR 97.3FM
My last DJ sets on WRIR were a Fall Spooky Vibes playlist on “Handful of Brains” and playing whatever I wanted on “Whatever I Want.” Some of it is still good play in November.
(Thanks for sticking around. Hopefully it won’t be another six months before another one these newsletter comes out)
